Posted on 06/05/2016 in Features for Teachers Mike Nicholson

Organise your own Highland Games for your class or school this summer with the help of Thistle Games by Mike Nicholson and Jo Litchfield!

NicholsonThistleGames-3dThe Highland Games are an age-old Scottish tradition celebrated every year by Scots all over the world. The games feature a variety of athletic events and familiar Scottish symbols like bagpipe music, kilts and dancing. Students will have fun competing in races and feats of strength with their classmates or in individual events. They can design their own braw tartan and win prizes based on the Scots words, all while learning about Scottish culture.

Thistle Games incorporates Scots words and Highland Games activities to teach readers about Scottish culture, traditions, and the Scots language. Who will achieve top marks in the welly throw, three-legged race, long jump, and tug-of-war? Download this activity sheet to find ideas for your own Highland games!
