Features for Teachers: Organising a book sale for your author visit
If you have an author visit coming up, giving your pupils the chance to buy books is a great way to keep them reading after the event. Our authors will always be happy to meet pupils and sign their books too.
Organising a book sale is simpler than you might think! Just follow these three easy steps:
1) Speak to us
As soon as you’ve booked the author visit, get in touch with the DiscoverKelpies team.
We can help you figure out the best way to get books to your school. There is a range of options, like working with a local bookshop or ordering books via the school office. Some authors are happy to bring their own books for sale, and we can let you know about this too.
2) Let your pupils know
We’re happy to provide a take-home sheet (or ‘bag-stuffer’) for your pupils, to let parents know about the author visit and the books for sale. You can see a sample sheet here.
If it’s easier for you, we can even organise a pre-order form, so you don’t have to handle money on the day.
3) Host the book sale!
If you’re organising the book sale via the school…
We’ll make sure the books get to you in plenty time for the author visit. You’ll need a table, a helpful teacher to sell the books, and some change.
You can return any unsold books to us after the event – you’ll just need to cover the postage cost.
If you’re working with a bookshop…
Most bookshops are happy to help with school events. We’ll get in touch with your local bookshop and will help them order appropriate books for the visit.
A member of bookshop staff will sell books on the day, or a helpful teacher can sell the books on their behalf.
You can see our more in-depth guide to Organising Book Sales here. If you have any questions, please just get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help.
