Meet the Kelpies Prize Winner 2011!

Posted on 19/08/2011 in The Kelpies Prize

Finally, the moment we have all been waiting for: I am delighted to announce that the winner of the Kelpies Prize 2011 is … drum roll, please … Alette Willis, with How to Make a Golem (and Terrify People)!

Last night the three shortlisted authors, with their friends and families, came to the Kelpies Prize 2011 ceremony at Edinburgh International Book Festival. Janis Mackay, author of the Magnus Fin series, read aloud from the three entries: How to Make a Golem (and Terrify People) by Alette Willis, The Really Weird Removals Company by Daniela Sacerdoti and The Resurrection Spell by Roy Gill. All three books were full of adventure and excitement, and there was no telling who would walk away with the prize.

Lari Don, author of the First Aid for Fairies series, made a speech giving advice to the authors, which included being determined, getting ready to carry big boxes of books into schools and having a cruel streak – because who would want to read a book where the author was nice to the characters all the time – boring!

The three shortlisted authors (along with the audience) waited nervously as Lari opened the top secret envelope to reveal the winner (yes, just like at the Oscars)…

Alette was thrilled about winning, and all her friends and family were jumping up and down with excitement. The giant cheque made everyone’s eyes pop (imagine going to the bank with that).

We are really looking forward to getting Alette’s book into the shops in November, so we better get started.
