Competiton winner leads Lari Don into a maze

Posted on 17/11/2011 in Competitions

Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to announce that the winner of the Set the Scene Competition is… (drum roll please) Emily Wright with her suggestion Traquair House!

Lari and Emily by the maze

The sun shone brightly as author Lari Don met the winner of her Set the Scene Competition yesterday. Emily Wright won the competition with her suggestion that Traquair House, and its maze, would be a brilliant place for Lari Don’s new novel in the First Aid for Fairies series.

Lari and the judges were immediately excited by Emily’s entry, because it included a maze. Lari wasn’t aware that Traquair House had a maze, but the danger and mystery of it sparked her imagination. What better place for a fabled beast such as a centaur, a selkie, a fairy or a dragon to have an adventure?

Emily led the way to the maze and seeing how big it was, Lari was a little worried she would get lost if she went in… Lari and Emily braved the maze together, and rest assured, they managed to find their way out again!

Emily giving a TV interview

They were met by local press: newspapers, radio and TV who interviewed them about the location and the books, and posed for some fabulous photographs – quite a change from being at school.

As part of her prize for winning the competition, Emily received signed copies of all books in the First Aid for Fairies series. Lari will also make a special author visit to her class at Priorsford Primary School in Peebles before Christmas.

There were nearly 250 fantastic entries for the competition, suggesting real-life Scottish locations to be used in the fourth and final book in the series. Lari and the judges awarded four runners-up prizes to Morag McDonald from Falkirk for suggesting the Blue Pool near Falkirk; Heather Jenkinson from Inverkip who suggested Cessford Castle near Kelso; Rowan Miller from Ullapool who suggested Corrieshalloch Gorge; and a collective prize to classes from Knockbreck Primary in Tain for suggesting locations around Nigg and Cromarty.

Lari is already writing the book and was busy taking notes while she was looking around. But she wouldn’t reveal what’s going to happen to Helen and her fabled beast friends…
